Mission Statement
The mission of the General Meade Society is to promote and preserve the memory of Union Major General George Gordon Meade, commander of the Army of the Potomac and architect of the Union victory at Gettysburg.
The Society includes members and supporters from throughout the country, as well as internationally, all of whom share a common interest in General Meade’s multifaceted life and career; in the history of the Civil War era; American veterans and education and preservation efforts.
Its activities include: working with the counselors and teachers of the Gen. Meade Elementary School in Philadelphia to support the students in their education; conducting tours of historic sites in Philadelphia and to areas related to American history; giving living history presentations, historical symposiums and supporting other history groups related to our mission.
The Society believes in Civil War battlefield preservation and working with the Friends of Laurel Hill and West Laurel Hill Cemeteries in Philadelphia to conduct graveside services honoring the dead of all wars. In Gettysburg, we help clean up and maintain the grounds surrounding the Meade Equestrian Monument and the General Humphreys statue as part of the ‘Adopt-a-Position’ project.
