The Annual Memorial Day Service of Meade Post 1, Grand Army of the Republic held at Laurel Hill Cemetery on May 29, 2016 was a well-attended success!
Participants, citizens and speakers gathered in front of the Laurel Hill Gatehouse and proceeded to dedication services of five Civil War veterans:
- Dendy Sharwood
- Isaac F. Moffatt
- Irwin Maclay Wallace
- Robert Parrish
- John Edwards
Dan Dailey of Ursinus College gave capsule histories of the veterans and Rev. Gregory Ray, Chaplain, the invocation. These veterans are now buried with appropriate tombstones and GAR markers and flags, an acknowledgment of their service to save the Union.
Following was a procession to the graveside of the Meade family. Capt. Louis Cavaliere, USN (ret.), the President of the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, gave the keynote speech. Wreathes were laid, followed by volleys from the Honor Guard and a musical interlude by the Philadelphia Brigade Band.
The group then proceeded to the Meade Post #1 G.A.R. plot for a historical sketch, wreath-laying, musical interlude, and final benediction by the Reverend Ray.
And then the celebrants adjourned to a reception & refreshments at the Gatehouse, provided by the Kearney Kommissary of Tom & Judy Kearney and volunteers of the Meade Society.
